When Burdens Become Battles—and Battles Become Breakthroughs
Have you ever smiled on the outside while feeling overwhelmed on the inside? Have you ever been the person everyone depends on, yet wondered who you could turn to when you needed help?
Sometimes, we carry so much for so many people that we forget we have limits, too. We keep pushing, keep serving, and keep trying to hold everything together because we believe it all depends on us.
But what happens when the burden becomes too heavy? What happens when the very thing we're trying to manage begins to wear us down?
In Exodus 18:13–26, Moses faced that very situation. His story teaches us that when burdens become battles, God can use those battles to lead us toward breakthrough.
Exodus 18:13–18
Moses spent his days judging the people's disputes from morning until evening. He was doing important work, but he was trying to handle everything himself.
When Jethro saw what was happening, he warned Moses that he and the people would wear themselves out. The task was too heavy for one person.
Sometimes, our greatest struggle isn't the responsibility God has given us—it's the way we're trying to manage it.
We keep saying yes when we should ask for help. We take on more than we can handle because we believe everything depends on us.
Remember: Being faithful doesn't mean doing everything yourself.
Recognizing your limitations isn't weakness. Sometimes, it's the first step toward wisdom.
Exodus 18:19–26
Jethro didn't just identify Moses' problem; he offered a solution. He encouraged Moses to appoint capable leaders who could share the responsibility.
Moses listened, made the necessary changes, and the work became more manageable.
What looked like an overwhelming burden became an opportunity for a better way forward!
There are three lessons we can learn:
This applies to our families, our workplaces, and our ministries. Healthy leadership isn't about doing everything yourself; it's about equipping others and allowing them to help.
Sometimes, the breakthrough you need isn't the removal of the responsibility, but the wisdom to handle it differently.
If you're feeling overwhelmed today, let Moses' story remind you that you don't have to keep carrying everything the same way.
Pause. Pray. Seek godly counsel. Be willing to make changes. And remember that asking for help doesn't mean you've failed; it may be the very step that moves you toward breakthrough.
Your burden may be where the battle begins, but with God's wisdom, that battle can become an opportunity for breakthrough!
Pastor's Question: What burden are you carrying that might require a new approach, godly counsel, or the help of someone else?
