Practical Christianity: Faith That Works

Christianity isn't just about what we believe—it's about how we live.

The book of James challenges us to take our faith out of the church building and put it into practice in our everyday lives. Real faith should make a real difference.

Here are six practical reminders from James:

1. Submit, Resist, and Flee

James 4:7–10

Submit yourself to God. Resist the devil. Flee from sin.

We don't overcome temptation by playing around with it. Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is walk away. Submit to God, stand against the enemy, and flee what pulls you away from God.

2. Let Your Faith Work

James 2:14–18

True faith is saving, never alone, and living.

Our good works don't save us, but genuine faith produces action. Faith should affect how we serve, love, forgive, give, and care for others.

Faith isn't just something we say; it's something we show.

3. Listen, Understand, and Obey

James 1:22–25

James tells us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only.

It's not enough to hear God's Word. We must understand what God is saying and then put it into practice.

The question isn't just, “What did God say?”

It's “What am I going to do because God said it?”

4. Be Patient and Trust God's Timing

James 5:7–8

Farmers understand that you can't rush a harvest.

There are seasons of planting, watering, waiting, and harvesting. Sometimes God is working even when we can't see it.

Be patient. Trust God's timing. Establish your heart.

Waiting on God is never wasted.

5. Control Your Tongue

James 3:2; James 1:26

Never underestimate the power of small things.

The tongue is small, but our words can change the direction of someone's life. One word can encourage, while another can wound deeply.

James reminds us that religion without control of the tongue is empty.

Before we speak, we should ask:

Is it true? Is it helpful? Does it honor God?

Our words should reflect the Jesus we claim to follow.

6. God's Wisdom Says: Trust Me, Ask Me, Show Me

James 1:2–4 — Trust Me.

Trials don't mean God has abandoned us. He can use difficult seasons to develop our faith and perseverance.

James 1:5 — Ask Me.

When we don't know what to do, ask God for wisdom. He gives generously.

James 3:13 — Show Me.

Godly wisdom isn't just something we talk about. It's something we demonstrate through the way we live.

Faith That Works

When you put all of this together, James gives us a simple challenge:

Submit. Resist. Flee.
Believe. Serve. Live.
Listen. Understand. Obey.
Wait. Trust. Persevere.
Speak life.
Trust God. Ask God. Show God.

The world doesn't just need to hear what we believe.

The world needs to see what we believe.

So let's take our Christianity beyond Sunday morning and into Monday morning.

Let's let our faith affect our words, our actions, our relationships, our decisions, and our everyday lives.

Don't just be a hearer of the Word. Be a doer of the Word.

That's practical Christianity.

That's faith that works.

And that's the kind of faith that can make a difference in our world.
